Cheap Armrest Fix

How much are they getting for the armrest--and what is the part number? I was thinking of just making up a thin metal plate that then attaches to the foam part of the rest via the 4 screws. It seems like that cheap plastic plate is the problem.

What I did may sound a bit tacky.....but it works......

Originally, mine broke under warranty, AMG provided a new one....but....they incorrectly sent the rear pull strap and not the front foam armrest. Warranty has since expired and I have failed to return the strap, which is not needed, in exchange for the correct part. Meanwhile, the other side has failed exactly the same way....thus....the following 'fix'.......

The plastic backing plate is what has failed on both of mine...allowing the retaining screws to simply pull through. I removed the plate....in pieces...and reassembled them on a flat surface.

Initially, just to hold them in the correct shape, I applied a small amount of '5 minute epoxy'.....the kind that comes in twin plunger type tubes......over each fracture line. Once cured.....just a few minutes.....I cut out a piece of thin fiberglass mesh using the plate as a template.

Brush on a coat of slower curing 2 part epoxy....you'll need the working time.....and lay on the mesh. Then apply a second coat of the same slow epoxy, in effect, sandwiching the mesh between the two coats.

(Oh....also...be sure to roughen up the plate with sandpaper and clean thoroughly or the epoxy won't bond well to it.)

The thickness of this 'jury rig' makes the armrest stand out just slightly from the door panel but not terribly noticeable. I don't expect this to last forever but it's better than the armrest flopping around or not having one at all.

In all honesty though......the metal plate fabrication sounds like a much more durable fix........just didn't think of that.

Oh...BTW....The rear door "pull strap" is a Chrysler product .. Part numbers: Chrysler # 5AE50JS1, AMG # 6001013G. (Note that this is for a grey strap.....may differ for different colors....)
