Fuel Caps - Vented vs. Unvented:

Gasoline power trucks have the normal vented caps. Gasoline generates more vapor with heat. This vapor goes into the carbon canister to be burned later. The vented cap allow the tank to breathe and allowing fresh air to enter.

The diesels use a sealed cap because of the lower vapor pressure, no carbon canister. As fuel is consumed, air is pulled in to replace it from the vent line which ends near the air intake with a little metal filter on it.
