Ross Mabey's Design for a Hummer Hood Scoop:

I am talking about replacing the louvre on top of the hood with a scoop. I have a local fabricator who makes them for me out of 1/8" aluminum. The louvre, above 30MPH, allows air to deflect off of the cooling stack and escape through the top half of it. The scoop traps the air, ramming it through the stack thus improving engine cooling and air flow through the condensor.
Can these be purchased through you? How much? What color(s)? I noticed the 97's have flat black, rather than body-colored louvres.

Actually they are gloss black but the scoop looks better color matched to the truck.
Yes Bob I can sell you one. They are a bit pricey because of the gauge of the materials and the fact that they are not mass produced, they are heliarch welded one at a time and then painted to match the truck or black if you wish. They are very sturdy to take off-road abuse. Also I have to have the original louvre back off the truck because I use the base of it as the base for the scoop and I use the wire mesh screen in the scoop. I can sell the scoop, painted, for $799 plus shipping. Core deposit of $500 refunded upon reciept of louvre. Perhaps you could find a local fabricator there who could make one for you.

Hello Ross,
I am going to build a hood scoop based on the 5.5 inches that you came up with in the next few weeks out of fiberglass. I am going to do way with the louvres and add some mesh to the front. And I will see about building a small metel frame with in the scoop for support.
I forgot to mention that I too remove the louvres from the base before I weld on the actual scoop. I cut the original wire mesh to fit the opening of the scoop. Sounds like the metal frame in the fiberglass is a good idea. Let me know how it works.
Any ideas on improvements?
I like your idea & testing of the scoop being more the 3 inches, 3 seemed a little small. 5-6 inches sound good. And seeing that I have the MileMarker winch, over the OEM on, I have one less problem.

You're right, I think the mile-marker would not deflect airflow any more than the standard non-winch bumper.

These are pictures of the second stage of hood scoop development, about a 4" high opening, adequate but not as efficient as the 5" opening. I'll send photos of the bigger scoop when I have them.
Thanks
